Our Goals

R.I.S.E

Revitalize programs and chapter support. Invest in professional, academic, and leadership growth. Strengthen our communication. Educate members and communities about NSBE’s value proposition and black excellence.

Leading with Vision and Purpose

Welcome to the Mother Region Page. My name is Philip Lawal, and I am a fifth-year Electrical and Computer Engineering Student at Ohio State University, and I'm honored to serve as your Region 4 Chairperson for the 2024-2025 term. The states within Region 4 are Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio, with international countries including Central Canada, East Africa, and Central Africa. You might be wondering why we refer to ourselves as the mother region. In 1974, Edward Coleman, Anthony Harris, Brian Harris, Stanley L. Kirtley, John W. Logan Jr., and George Smith, collectively known as the “Chicago Six”, alongside numerous other Purdue Engineering students and Professor Arthur J. Bond, Ph.D., established the inaugural chapter of what was then the Society of Black Engineers, later evolving into The National Society of Black Engineers. As the mother region, we proudly display our yellow colors and embody the NSBE mission each day. As you navigate through our page, feel free to reach out with any questions.

Thank you for your visit, and always remember to stay 4solid.

History

Region IV has a rich history of leadership and excellence. Region IV proudly hosted the first-ever NSBE National Conference at Purdue University, setting the stage for the organization's impactful future. Additionally, Region IV was home to NSBE’s first National Chairperson and trailblazer Virginia Booth, who made history as the first woman and the first individual to serve two terms in this esteemed role. Demonstrating continued excellence, Region IV celebrates its recent achievements with the Chapter of the Year honors for 2023-2024 awarded to the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan State University, and the Indiana Institute of Technology.

Initiatives

1. Raising awareness of social and political issues by spotlighting key events, policies, and providing critical information that impacts our members and the broader community. This includes educating members on absentee voting and ensuring they have the tools to engage civically, even while away from home.

2. Roadshows, which are where we visit colleges across the region, especially those in need of additional support. We also intend to actively connect with NSBE Jr. chapters and host impactful community service events.

We believe in fostering connections and having fun while building community. Events like cookouts, yard games, and NSBE trivia with prizes bring members together in a relaxed and welcoming environment. To further enrich our members.

3. The Technology Drive focuses on collecting and distributing laptops, tablets, and other devices to students in need. This initiative enhances access to essential tools, ensuring our community is equipped for success. Together, we’re building a stronger, more connected future.
