Setting the Standard: The Model Region Way

Greetings to the HYPEST Region and NSBE Family!

I am William Corey Jr., an M.S. Electrical Engineering student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and it is my distinct honor to serve as your Region II Chairperson for the 2024-2025 term. Region II, the Model Region, represents the very essence of NSBE’s mission: to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. Together, from NSBE Jr., collegiate, to professional members, we will uphold and expand on this mission as we set the standard for excellence in everything we do.

Region II’s legacy as the Model Region is a reflection of our collective dedication and determination. Our chapters have always been leaders in advancing NSBE’s mission, and as we celebrate NSBE’s 50th anniversary, we have the unique opportunity to honor our past, embrace our present, and chart a bold course for our future. This year, we will continue building on the foundation of excellence that defines Region II, ensuring that every member across each level feels empowered to succeed and contribute.

This year’s Regional Directive, LEAD, PIONEER, OPERATE: THE MODEL REGION WAY, captures the vision and strategy that will guide us in strengthening our region.

LEAD with Purpose:

Leadership is at the heart of our mission. This year, we are focused on preparing leaders at every level of NSBE from NSBE Jr. members taking their first steps in STEM, to collegiate members leading their chapters, and professionals mentoring the next generation. Through leadership training, mentorship initiatives, and intentional chapter engagement, we aim to build a robust leadership pipeline that sustains excellence across all facets of NSBE.

Our goal is not just to create effective leaders but to foster leaders who embody the NSBE mission. By equipping our members with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to lead with integrity and purpose, Region II will continue to shine as an example of what leadership truly means.

PIONEER Program Development:

To truly fulfill NSBE’s mission, we must innovate and inspire. This year, Region II will pioneer programs that cater to the unique needs of our diverse membership from pre-collegiate students in NSBE Jr. exploring their potential, to collegiate members building their academic and professional skills, to professionals advancing in their careers and giving back.

Through bold initiatives, strategic partnerships, and the integration of emerging technologies, we will create opportunities that align with NSBE’s core values. From academic workshops and professional networking events to community impact projects and social gatherings, these programs will empower our members to excel academically, succeed professionally, and contribute to their communities.

OPERATE with Efficiency:

Excellence in execution is what makes the Model Region stand out. To meet the needs of our members, we will prioritize transparency, accessibility, and streamlined operations. Through the implementation of monthly updates, post-event feedback, and enhanced communication channels, Region II will ensure every member (i.e. NSBE Jr., collegiate, and professional) has the resources and support they need to thrive.

Additionally, we will focus on optimizing our internal workflows to enhance the overall member experience at regional events and streamline the processes that keep our region running effectively. By doing so, we will create an environment where collaboration and innovation can flourish.

Region II is more than just a region: it is a community united by the shared purpose of advancing NSBE’s mission. By fostering mentorship between professional and collegiate members, encouraging collaboration across chapters, and creating spaces for engagement at all levels, we will continue to strengthen the bonds that make the Model Region the standard of excellence.

As we move forward, I challenge each of you to live the NSBE mission in everything you do. Whether it’s mentoring a peer, leading an initiative, or giving back to your community, each of us has a role to play in advancing NSBE’s vision.

Let’s lead with courage, pioneer with creativity, and operate with precision. The Model Region Way starts with us, and together, we will create a legacy of excellence that inspires the next generation of Black engineers.

Let’s make 2024-2025 a transformational year for Region II and for NSBE.
