The first few months of 2026 have seen the always-fast pace of cybersecurity technology accelerate even further. AI is transforming the work of defending online networks, investigating threats and responding to attacks. New tools — among them Claude Code Security and, reportedly, Claude Mythos Preview — are showing how quickly AI capabilities are expanding and how deeply they are beginning to influence cybersecurity work. For NSBE members preparing for careers in engineering and technology, these advancements are creating both opportunity and uncertainty.
Cybersecurity professionals have long relied on technical knowledge, patience and sound judgment. They monitor systems, analyze suspicious activity, patch vulnerabilities and manage incidents, often while working under great pressure. AI is becoming a valuable assistant in many of those tasks. AI can review enormous amounts of data quickly, identify unusual patterns, summarize findings and automate repetitive work. That’s allowing professionals to focus more on strategy, risk management and complex decision-making.
On the other hand, the same tools helping cyber defenders can also help cyber attackers create convincing phishing campaigns, probe for weaknesses or move faster than before. AI may also change hiring patterns by reducing demand for some entry-level tasks while increasing demand for specialized skills. In short, cybersecurity careers are still promising, but they may evolve greatly in the near future.
Exactly how will those careers change? Now’s a great time to hear diverse informed opinions and keep your eyes on the trends. Our reading list below is a good start. Consider it an invitation to learn more about a field that remains important, and full of open questions!
