Programs

Technical Outreach Community Help (TORCH), NSBE's flagship community service program, harnesses the technical expertise of our members to ignite positive change within our communities.

Program Overview

TORCH is an umbrella program of NSBE focused on outreach activities that impact non-NSBE members and NSBE members, especially pre-college youth in the Black community. TORCH’s signature initiative includes A Walk for Education, asingle-day outreach activity aimed at encouraging youth to be better prepared for higher educational opportunities in STEM fields, and in general. Activities to support TORCH programming include:
Formal classroom-style education in STEM fields aimed at both youth and adults
Casual outreach activities, targeted at youth, which aim to show how science & engineering can be fun.
Using our technical skills to provide a direct service to the community.
Any other type of community service: food & clothing drives, volunteering at a shelter.

Community Improvement Initiative

Join the Community Improvement Initiative (CII), a dynamic partnership with CE Corps that empowers NSBE members to harness their technical and professional skills for real change. Through CII, members collaborate with communities to engineer solutions for pressing needs that lack funding. By tackling projects in lower-income areas, we’re not only enhancing living conditions but also inspiring the next generation in STEM. Under the TORCH program, we’re committed to fostering compassion and nurturing future leaders.

Community Criteria

This provides information to communities that need improvement projects for their community but do not have the financial means to complete them.

Volunteer Process

This program is a great way to serve volunteer hours, add experience to your resume, and learn from professionals, while being given resources to successfully complete projects!

RISE

R.I.S.E. is an acronym that stands for “Research and Development, Innovative Thinking, Social Emergence, and Excel before the pressure.”

This initiative features engaging forums with law enforcement officials, legal experts, and judicial figures, offering participants a unique chance to harness their technical skills for societal progress. Additionally, it provides valuable tools for effective platform organization.

As part of NSBE's Technical OutReach and Community Help (TORCH) program, we aim to empower marginalized individuals with a comprehensive understanding of their constitutional rights, facilitate meaningful discussions, impart practical knowledge applicable to various situations, and inspire proactive change.

Initiatives

    R

Research and development will go toward making a difference in security and law enforcement technology being used in the field, to decrease fatalities and bring to justice perpetrators of unlawful acts of violence.

    I

Innovative thinking involves brainstorming on certain social injustice topics, and discussions that will lead to the R&D process.

    S

Social emergence will give us the knowledge, wisdom, and experience needed to potentially make a difference in our communities through education, civil acts platforms, and practical applications.

    E

And last, “excel before the pressure” is the statement we will lean on to know that we will be prepared to take head-on, with excellence, any, and every situation that we face.

Don’t Miss the Opportunity to Elevate Yourself and Connect with the Best

We envision a world in which engineering is a mainstream word in homes and communities of color, and all Black students can envision themselves as engineers. In this world, Blacks exceed parity in entering engineering fields, earning degrees, and succeeding professionally.

The NSBE membership year spans August 1 – July 31.
