Expanding STEM in the community
Community Partners
The 50K Coalition
The 50K Coalition is a unique collaborative of more than 40 organizations focused on a bold national goal:
to produce 50,000 diverse engineering graduates annually by 2025.
The coalition was formed by the AISES, NSBE, SHPE and SWE, the nation’s preeminent diversity engineering organizations, which collectively serve more than 85,000 pre-collegiate, collegiate and professional members. The expertise and more than 188 years of collective experience of the coalition’s founding organizations perfectly position them to tackle the coalition’s goal.
Kappa Alpha Psi
Founded in 1911 on the campus of Indiana University, Kappa Alpha Psi ® is the 2nd oldest existing collegiate historically Black Greek Letter Fraternity and the 1st intercollegiate Fraternity incorporated as a national body. It remains the only Greek letter organization with its Alpha Chapter on Indiana University’s campus.
The Fraternity has over 125,000 members with 700 undergraduate and alumni chapters in nearly every state of the United States, and international chapters in Nigeria, South Africa, the West Indies, the United Kingdom, Germany, Korea and Japan.
Promoting STEM education and career readiness
With an agreement in place, NSBE and ΚΑΨ have pledged to promote and facilitate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and career readiness for pre-college students from groups that are underrepresented in these fields.
The objectives of the MOU will be achieved primarily through both organizations’ youth programs: the National Society of Black Engineers’ NSBE Jr. Chapters and ΚΑΨ’s Guide Right National Service Program.
ΚΑΨ and NSBE will collaborate in establishing six Regional Guide Right NSBE Jr. chapters, to provide students in grades 3–12 with supplemental STEM curricula and exposure to STEM concepts and career opportunities.
“This partnership creates a synergy of two great organizations for a common cause to break down institutional and economic barriers for students of color to explore and pursue technology careers,” said Kevin Burnett, national Guide Right chairman of Kappa Alpha Psi®, who is responsible for supporting all of the fraternity’s youth programs and initiatives.
The Links Incorporated
The Links, with its membership of more than 15,000 professional women in the U.S. and abroad, is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.
Partners in promoting STEM
In support of NSBE’s mission and the commitment of The Links, Incorporated to enrich and enhance the lives of Black youth, the two organizations are working in partnership through 2021 to close the academic achievement gap between African-American and other students in pre-kindergarten through college, with the intent of preparing them for success in the global STEM workforce. The partnership calls for delivery of high-quality STEM educational programs for underrepresented minority students across the country, through the establishment of LINKS-NSBE Jr. chapters. A total of 90 of the chapters are now active across 24 states, and more are planned.
Partnering with NSBE enables chapters of The Links, Incorporated to tap into the technical and career development resources of NSBE and create positive peer interactions for students via NSBE Jr. conferences.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) is a nonprofit organization serving and advancing Hispanics in STEM. With more than 13,000 student and professional members, SHPE’s mission is to change lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support, and development.
To accomplish this, SHPE provides a variety of programming, services, resources, and events, including hosting the largest Hispanic STEM convention in the nation.
Changing lives through empowerment
Vision SHPE’s vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.

The American Society of Civil Engineers
Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 150,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America’s oldest national engineering society. ASCE works to raise awareness of the need to maintain and modernize the nation’s infrastructure using sustainable and resilient practices, advocates for increasing and optimizing investment in infrastructure, and improve engineering knowledge and competency.
Solving Engineering Workforce Challenges Together
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) announced their renewed strategic partnership in a ceremony on Feb. 24 at the National Academy of Sciences’ Great Hall in Washington, D.C.
The organizations’ leaders signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) committing to combine their resources and expertise to increase the retention, representation and development of African-American civil engineers in the U.S. workforce.
Under the MOU, NSBE and ASCE will offer reciprocal memberships; co-sponsor frequent professional development, continuing education, mentoring and leadership development programming; and promote and support student and local chapter collaborations.
The organizations will also engage in large-scale efforts aimed at promoting awareness and interest in engineering careers, such as an upcoming IM AX film and educational project, DreamBig! (www.dreambigfilm.org).
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
Our purpose is to ignite and celebrate aerospace ingenuity and collaboration, and its importance to our way of life. Our promise is to be your vital lifelong link to the aerospace community and a champion for its achievements.
Since 1963, members of a single professional society have achieved virtually every milestone in the modern American flight. That society is the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. With nearly 30,000 individual members from 91 countries and 95 corporate members, AIAA is the world’s largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace profession.
Created in 1963 by the merger of the two great aerospace societies of the day, the American Rocket Society (founded in 1930 as the American Interplanetary Society), and the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences (established in 1933 as the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences), AIAA carries forth a proud tradition of more than 80 years of aerospace leadership.
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the Aerospace Special Interest Group of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE Aerospace SIG) have announced a collaboration to benefit each group’s members through reciprocal membership opportunities and joint activities. The groups have been working together on events and initiatives throughout the year leading to this formalized agreement. The organizations share a deep commitment to increasing active participation by Black professionals in the engineering profession specifically and the aerospace industry more broadly.
The AIAA Diversity and Inclusion Working Group (DWG) is focused on raising awareness of the importance of diversity and inclusion, publishing its Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan 2021-2023 to create new opportunities for improving diversity and inclusion across the AIAA community.
“We are thrilled to work even more closely with the Aerospace Special Interest Group of the National Society of Black Engineers,” commented AIAA Executive Director Dan Dumbacher. “AIAA regions and sections will have numerous opportunities to work with their NSBE counterparts on the local level by developing joint programs for professional and university members, as well as STEM K-12 events.”
